Champions League Betting Odds and Tips: More Success for English Clubs?

The Champions League is back in midweek, and we have the return meetings from the last round of games. These double headers are always great indicators for the top sides, provided that they get a stern test. We’re not sure what Liverpool can learn at home to Maribor after beating them 7-0 away, but City’s meeting with Napoli should be a brilliant tie. Ahead of this week’s Champions League matches, we’ve picked out a few betting tips for you to take a look at.

Napoli v Man City: City can Edge out Impressive Napoli

Manchester City head in to their Champions League game this week with a slight advantage over Napoli, which is their squad depth. The Italian league leaders have a limited squad, and they’ve made no secret that they’re prioritising the league over Europe. They’re still likely to name a strong team, but they’ll make changes where possible, so it’s hard to see them playing at their free-flowing best this week.

We see City doing enough to get the win here, a result that won’t trouble Napoli too much. They are still set to qualify anyway, but City are out to top the group and go on a run in this tournament. Given how well City have been playing in the league and in Europe, we are expecting a victory. We think they’re great value for the away win, but we’re going for City and BTTS at big betting odds of 11/4 with Bet365 as our tip on this one.

Before you make any bets on Napoli v Man City or any other big Champions League tie, you should take a look at our odds comparison. Roma v Chelsea: Chelsea Preparing for Battle in Rome

After a 3-3 draw two weeks ago, the temptation to back a high scoring clash between Chelsea and Roma once again is considerable. However, will both sides really go all out for the win, or will this play out more in line with Roma’s 0-0 with Atletico on the opening matchday? We think this will be a tighter contest, with the pair both knowing that a defeat here leaves them in serious danger of missing out on the knockout round.

While it’s hard to go for the straight 0-0 in this one, we do expect a low scoring game. We can see this one finishing level, with Chelsea knowing that a draw keeps them top. With Roma three points clear of Atletico, the draw isn’t the worst result for them either. The hosts have warmed up for this game with a streak of four straight games with fewer than three goals, so we’re siding with a low scoring result here. We’re predicting a draw and under 2.5 goals, which can be backed at 7/2 with Betfair.

: Manchester Utd v BenficaMourinho’s Bus to Put United in Driving Seat

Manchester United went to a Benfica side who had lost 2-1 at home to CSKA Moscow and yet Jose Mourinho still went defensive. Never mind that the Portuguese side were thrashed 5-0 by Basel in the previous matchday, United settled for a 1-0 win in their trip, instead of sending out a message to the rest of Europe to show their intent on lifting the Champions League this season. That’s been a running theme from United in recent weeks, with Mourinho ensuring his side are defensively set up to not lose these clashes, instead of showing what attacking potential they have going forward.

There’s little reason for us to believe that the meeting at Old Trafford will be any different. United have gone out to not concede in recent big games, and they should do that against a Benfica team who have scored once in their three group games. We think a United win to nil is great value here, and that bet can be backed at 21/20 with Ladbrokes.

Another bet we like on this game is for the match to be low scoring. Obviously we don’t see Benfica getting a goal, while Mourinho has little reason to push his men forward if they’ve wrapped up a clean sheet. We’re backing a home win and under 2.5 match goals, which is priced at 2/1 with Betfair, which we see as a huge price given United’s conservative approach to games of late.

: Tottenham v Real MadridEuropean Champions Searching for Wembley win

Given how poor Tottenham looked against West Ham, you have to ask if their defensive problems at Wembley are creeping back in again. After facing sides who came to this stadium looking to defend, Spurs are now up against top opposition, with Real Madrid visiting in midweek. The European champions will be looking for an improved display after a 1-1 draw with Spurs two weeks ago, and we expect them to take full advantage of the spacious Wembley pitch by getting forward and causing problems here.

While Tottenham’s strong start in Europe allows them the possibility of losing here and still making it through, they won’t let that cross their minds. The problem for Spurs here is most likely going to be their defensive issues, which have seen them slip up a little more often than they’d like. Given the quality Real have, we fully expect the visitors to grab a couple of goals and make up for their performance in the last encounter. We like the look of over 1.5 Real Madrid goals, which is 8/11 with Betfred. On top of that, we also quite like the visitors’ price of 6/5 with Bet365 to take all three points here.

: Liverpool v MariborLiverpool Looking for Another Thumping Win

After destroying Maribor on the road, we fully expect Liverpool to serve up another impressive win in this game. They will be looking to unleash a few of their league frustrations on a lesser side, especially as they are edging towards a place in the last 16 of this competition. We’re in little doubt that the Reds will be comfortable winners, so we’re backing them to serve up another goal fest. We’re backing over 4.5 goals for the hosts at 10/7 with Unibet, while Liverpool with a -3 handicap looks quite safe at 3/4 with William Hill.
