Champions League Odds Comparison: Premier League Sides on top in Europe

04/12/2017 13:55

the champions league group stage wraps up this week, with sides fighting for vital points in the final round. the story of this season has been the fantastic displays by english sides, with all five coming in to their last group match in top spot. however, chelsea and liverpool need a victory to stay there. we’ve taken a look at their fixtures and the rest of the biggest games, and you can see the latest betting tips and odds comparison for them below.

chelsea v atl madrid: chelsea gunning for first

chelsea have had a mixed champions league campaign, but they’re sitting top of their group heading into their final fixture on tuesday. while antonio conte has already guided his team through to the next round, he knows the risk that finishing second has to his side. it’s likely they would have just three options in the next round, including barcelona and psg. that makes finishing top a key aim, so the blues have to win their clash with atletico madrid at stamford bridge this week. however, the spaniards are pushing for a place in the next round, making it one of the few games this week where both sides need a result.

the problem for atletico is that they need more than a result, they’ll have to win and hope that roma slip up to group minnows qarabag. the spaniards have left themselves in an almost impossible position following their slow start, and we struggle to see them getting anywhere near the top two ultimately. their need for a win does suggest that they’ll be a little more offensive in this trip to the bridge, while chelsea should continue their impressive scoring form. the hosts have hit 15 goals across their matches so far, and we see the adding to that. we’re backing both teams to score in this game, which is best priced at 4/5 with coral on our odds comparison.

celtic v anderlecht: can celtic stay in europe?

while the english champions need a win, the scottish champions are also pushing for a result this week. while celtic had the deck stacked against them early on in this group, they are in contention for a europa league place. not only would that represent an improvement on last season, but it would allow brendan rodgers to continue to test his dominant force in scottish football against some tough european opposition. they head in to this game with anderlecht needing a result to wrap up third place, but there’s little reason why the bhoys should simply settle for a point in this clash. rodgers should be sending his team out to claim a victory.

anderlecht lost the home clash with celtic, one of six straight defeats they’ve suffered in this competition. they’ve not been anywhere near the level needed to threaten in this group, while the bhoys are at least scoring goals and causing problems for their opponents. we think home advantage will be a huge boost for the scottish champions, who look like excellent value in the betting ahead of this game. ahead of this clash, the hosts are priced at 17/20 with betfred according to our odds comparison, and that seems like a good value bet.

bayern munich v psg: psg bound for germany

elsewhere in celtic’s group, bayern munich and psg are battling it out for top spot. this is undoubtedly the highlight of the week’s matches, with the french side likely to be severely tested in this trip. however, they’ve recorded the best ever set of results in a group stage campaign with a game to go, as no side has ever scored as many group goals as the french champions have in their opening five. can they continue that form in this trip?

bayern have really turned things around since their heavy loss in paris, and they’ve shot up to the top of the bundesliga. we can’t see them being left behind here like they were in that 3-0 loss. while we expect psg to continue their high scoring ways as they look to finish top, we expect a couple of goals from the german champions too. we’re backing over 3.5 goals in this clash, which is priced at 5/4 with ladbrokes.

liverpool v spartak moscow: reds face crunch clash at anfield

liverpool could still crash out of the champions league if this game completely falls apart for them. the reds are involved in the tightest game in the group ahead of this week’s final match, with spartak and sevilla chasing the premier league side. jurgen klopp saw his team throw away the chance to secure a spot in the last 16 after throwing away a 3-0 lead in their recent trip to sevilla, but that point at least kept them top heading into this match. as long as they can secure all three points at anfield this week, then klopp can be happy with that point.

the issue for liverpool of late has been defending, as their recent scoring form has been excellent. their trip to spartak earlier in the tournament saw the reds fluff several big chances, with a free-kick from the russians flying in to secure a 1-1 draw. that’s among the results that has kept spartak involved in the battle for qualification, but we can’t see them standing up to the assault from liverpool this week.

the english side have scored three or more goals in seven of their previous eight matches, so they’re clearly not struggling in front of goal any longer. we’re backing that form to continue here, with over 2.5 goals for the home side priced at 10/11 with betfair. given that klopp’s men are heavy favourites according to our odds comparison that seems like good value.

shakhtar donetsk v man city: city set to rotate

manchester city have little to worry about in the champions league, they’re already through in top spot. their focus in this competition is simply on the draw for the last 16 next week. however, they travel to a shakhtar donetsk side who need a result in this game to make it through to the last 16. with napoli pushing the ukrainians for a place in the top two here, this is a make or break finale for those two. the problem is that city aren’t quite feeling the same pressure, and they’re unlikely to take wednesday night’s trip quite as seriously as napoli would like.

while the italians need city to win to boost their hopes of going through, the premier league side are focused on their domestic campaign. napoli have done the same throughout this group, they just haven’t got the results. city have a huge meeting with manchester united coming up, which is going to be vital to their title charge. with that game taking on a lot of significance for the visitors, we think shakhtar could grab a win here. the ukrainians are favourites according to our odds comparison, and we’re backing them at 13/10 with betvictor.
