The Egyptian Premier League is the top flight of Egyptian football. It is one of the best leagues in African football, having been placed second in the latest CAF (Confederation of African Football) league ranking.
Egyptian football is at the forefront of Africa, given their success in the club and national game and betting on it is becoming more popular. Egyptian clubs lead the way in African Champions League victories. The National side has won the African Cup of Nations more times than any other side. That gives the Egyptian Premier League quite a bit of prestige within Africa and bookies are taking note, offering a wider range of odds and markets.
While their clubs aren’t exactly household names, they have plenty of successful sides. The country also boasts some pretty large stadia, with a club expected to move into the 86,000 capacity Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria soon. Cairo Stadium, the home of the national side, has a massive 75,000 seats, bigger than all but two English grounds.
The current campaign (2016) sees Al Alhy leading the way once again. They’re the most dominant side in Egypt, and they’re on for a 38th title if they continue their strong season so far. Given that those 38 titles have come in just 57 seasons, it’s clear just how much of a monopoly they have over football in the country. Given their record and their lead at the top, it’s no shock that Al Ahly lead the way in the outright winner betting. After their great record this season, you might want to keep an eye on their odds as an extra boost to your next accumulator.
Al Ahly tend to be the most well-known club outside of Egypt, but the league isn’t too well followed internationally. Often the less followed leagues tend to be checked less by bookmakers, which gives you the chance to pick up a good value bet or two. While Al Ahly haven’t made much of an impact on the African continent in the last two seasons, they’ll be hopeful of making the local Champions League final in October. With another Egyptian title seemingly on the way, you’d struggle to bet against them and they are worth checking out in the continental betting too.
There is more to Egyptian football than just Al Ahly though, there’s also Giza side Zamalek. They are the second most successful side in the country, as well as the defending champions. They now sit a little bit off the pace in the title race. They’ll be hoping to claim a place in the top two, to make the 2017 Champions League.
Having finished in the top two an incredible 43 times, you’d have to fancy Zamalek to make it into the premier African competition next term. Even if they don’t seem capable of a title win, they’re worth a look in the betting for a top two spot.
