The Slovak Super Liga is the highest level of Slovakian domestic men’s football. The league has fluctuated in size since being formed in 1993 when the modern Slovakian state was created, but it currently features the top 12 sides in the country. The league is currently known as the Fortuna Liga for sponsorship reasons, and it’s currently into its 23rd season.
Although it’s not a league that’s widely known around the world, the Slovak Super Liga is certainly an interesting competition and one that is attracting increasing attention from football betting fans. The last few years have seen the division improve its stature in Europe, with MSK Zilina making it into the Champions League group stages in 2010.
Despite not being the most well-known league around the world, there are still plenty of chances to bet on the Fortuna Liga. Almost all of the best bookmakers cover the league, but it’s still relatively obscure and as such less well-researched by the bookies themselves. That means it is likely to be easier to find good value bets on the Slovakian top flight than it is in many of the bigger European ones.
The idea of betting on Slovakian football may seem strange to many, but is it really that different? Of course, Slovakia will be heading to the European Championships in France in 2016. They’re set to face both England and Wales in group B, as well as Russia. They’ve never made the Euros before, but they did make the last 16 at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, a fantastic achievement for them. Ranked 15th in the world as recently as August 2015, their team is really improving, although it features few players from the Super Liga.
The league seems to have gained a new major side, given the recent rise of AS Trencin. They won their first league title last season, and they’re on course to retain it this time around. That broke up the monopoly between Zilina and Slovan Bratislava, who had won every title since 2009 and had made betting on the outright winner market something of a doddle!
Those two had 14 titles between them, but now it looks like Trencin could be ready to break up that monopoly and dominate on their own. Slovakia’s two biggest clubs will likely be back next season to put up a sterner fight, so you might want to check out the outright winner betting during the summer. Backing a winner in Slovakia could give you something else to keep an eye on over the course of a season and for those in the know the odds definitely have much to offer.
