The Allsvenskan, or All-Swedish league, is the top tier of professional football in Sweden and features 16 teams with the season being contested from April to November, thus avoiding the harsh Swedish winter.
Whilst Malmo and IFK Göteborg have been the dominant teams in the history of the league, with 32 league titles between them since the inception of the Allsvenskan in 1924, betting on the league is a lot of fun because it is far more open than many European leagues.
Since 2000 there have been 10 different winners of the league and most seasons there is little to separate the top few in the betting odds, making it an unpredictable and interesting event to bet on, unlike countries such as Spain, Scotland or England where one or two clubs dominate.
In 2012 IF Elfsborg won the Allsvenskan, which was quite a surprise given they had only won the title once previously since 1961. If you backed them for that then well done because the betting odds were huge and few saw it coming. They are going well again this year but Helsingborg are probably the better bet, whilst Göteborg also look in with a chance of claiming their first Allsvenskan title since 2007 – a long wait by their standards.
