Belgium v England – Pressure Off and Goals Aplenty

On Saturday afternoon hundreds of millions of people around the world will watch a game that none of them really cares about. Welcome to Saint Petersburg and the third place play-off game. Belgium and England will have just a few days to get over their semi final defeats to France and Croatia respectively. It is Roberto Martinez’s men who are the clear favourites, priced at odds of 6/5 with England out at 23/10.

These two teams met in the last game of Group G, a dead rubber that Belgium reserves won 1-0. Both managers have implied they will field strong sides and try and win the game but then they both did that before the group clash.

It’s hard to call the winner here as much depends on who plays, their motivation and how they respond from the crushing pain of their midweek defeats. What we can be sure of, however, is that Martinez has the better squad.

Perhaps the main subplot for this bronze medal game is actually the race for gold. Four of the key contenders for the Golden Boot and Golden Gloves will come face to face at either end of the pitch. Whilst Thibaut Courtois and Jordan Pickford, and Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku are quite well matched, in most other departments Belgium have a clear edge.

Because of that we predict Belgium will win but we’re increasing our return by including BTTS in our bet too. There is no pressure in these play-off games and that has tended to produce open clashes with plenty of goals. Both teams have scored in four of the last five World Cup third place games, with an average of four goals per match. We see Belgium winning this 3-1 but Belgium and BTTS is our betting tip at very tasty odds.
