With Luis Suarez having departed to Barcelona the betting in the outright top goalscorer market for this season’s Premier League looks relatively open. We take a look at the favourites and explain why we think they should be opposed, as well as providing betting odds and our predictions and betting tips.

The favourites to be this season’s top goalscorer are Robin van Persie and Sergio Aguero at betting odds of 5/1 and 11/2 respectively, with a small jump to Daniel Sturridge at 6/1.

However, we worry about the long-term fitness of the top two in the betting, whilst Sturridge will find things much tougher without Suarez to distract the defenders and provide the assists.

As such our main betting tip in the top goalscorer market is a player at slightly longer betting odds and that is Chelsea’s Diego Costa. The Brazil-born forward has all the physical attributes needed in the Premier League and we expect Chelsea to be more attacking this season, meaning their playmakers should provide him with plenty of chances.

Odds of 7/1 look solid value to us for Costa to be the top goalscorer, whilst Wilfried Bony offers appeal in the each way betting at 28/1.
