Australian Grand Prix 2021 Betting Odds
The Australian Grand Prix is always the curtain-raiser when it comes to the Formula 1 season, with the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit playing host to the first race of the campaign and preparations are underway before the various drivers and constructors head Down Under.
The race takes place on 15 March and Lewis Hamilton is the odds-on favourite to get his 2020 season off to a winning start, with the 35-year-old driving once again for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team and he already has six World Championships under his belt.
That includes a hat-trick of consecutive victories and it’s likely that Hamilton will secure pole position in Australia, although it’s worth noting that the Brit failed to land this opener twelve months ago.
It was Valtteri Bottas who managed to scoop maximum points in the Australian Grand Prix in 2019 and the Finn is trading as third favourite to retain his title in Melbourne, with the Mercedes driver hoping to usurp his team-mate and steal a march.
It is clear that Bottas doesn’t have to always play second fiddle to Hamilton and perhaps represents the best each-way value, with Charles Leclerc potentially the driver who can split the two team-mates.
Leclerc will drive for Scuderia Ferrari Mission Winnow and the Monegasque driver is clearly a talented young gun who has the world at his feet at the age of 22.
The youngster will really hope that Ferrari can give him a car where he can be competitive and he was able to rack up 264 points in the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship to finish fourth last time out.
Leclerc is clearly the most progressive driver in the field and some Formula 1 fans think he’s the only one who can push Hamilton close in 2020, although there are a couple of other drivers that are worth a mention.
Max Verstappen drives for Aston Martin Red Bull Racing and the Dutchman is given a sporting chance by the bookies, with the 22-year-old another young gun who was on the podium plenty of times last year.
He has scored eight wins during his Formula 1 career to date and will hope that the constructor has a car where he can compete against the Mercedes’, while Sebastian Vettel represents the old guard and can clearly be competitive against the other leading contenders.
The German might play second fiddle to Leclerc in the Ferrari car, although let’s not forget that he has four Formula 1 World Championships under his belt although the latest of these came in 2013.

2014 is all about change when it comes to Formula 1, with new engines, new fuel regulations, new car design, huge changes to aerodynamics and even changes to the points system and the penalties structure.
As ever, much of this change is designed to make the sport more exciting but making things faster, safer and, as is increasingly demanded, greener, all at the same time, is no easy task. One thing that does seem to have worked, for now at least, is that the changes look to have made Red Bull’s clear dominance a thing of the past.
In tests Red Bull are struggling and whilst it may be a temporary issue, for now it looks like the Mercedes may be the car to beat and that means that Lewis Hamilton is the one to watch here. His pace in Bahrain tests has been blistering and whilst we can’t be sure that will translate into a win here at the Australian Grand Prix, Hamilton is the race favourite at betting odds of 5/2 with Betfred.
Next in the betting comes his teammate Nico Rosberg at odds of 9/2 with Sky Bet and others, followed by Fernando Alonso (8/1 with BetVictor) and Jenson Button at 10/1 with Bet365. World champion and record breaker extraordinaire Sebastian Vettel is way out at odds of 12/1 with BetVictor, and even a touch higher at Betfair, and it would take a strange turn of events for the German champion to win here.
Hamilton has won here before (in 2008) and looks very good and he simply has to be our main betting tip. His compatriot Button has to be respected though at decent odds and given he has won this race three times since 2009, often not in the best car, he looks worth an each way punt.
