World Cup Group G Winner Odds: England to Stumble Through in Belgium’s Wake

The World Cup in Russia is fast approaching and here we cast our learned eyes over proceedings in Group G. Here we find two of the perceived contenders for World Cup glory in the form of Belgium and England. Panama and Tunisia make up the numbers in the group, and though we don’t expect them to progress beyond that, they could make like difficult for the top two (especially England!).

Belgium Rightful Favourites

Belgium are the sixth favourites to lift the World Cup trophy in Russia, behind Brazil, Germany, France, Spain and Argentina. Roberto Martinez’s men are priced at betting odds of 12/1 to win the tournament outright and they are the 5/6 favourites to finish at the top of Group G (with Bet365).

With the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne amongst their ranks, it is no surprise that Belgium are the favourites to get the better of their rivals in the group. Clearly the key clash is going to be when they face Gareth Southgate’s England in Kaliningrad on Thursday 28th June.

The last time those two met at a World Cup was back in 1990 when David Platt’s memorable volley in extra time settled the match, England winning 1-0. Since then the sides have met three times, with one draw and two wins for England.

Despite recent history being in the Three Lions’ favour, it is clear to us that Belgium have a better quality squad and we should back them to get the better of Southgate’s men. Even if England do manage a draw against the Belgians, we would still predict Martinez’s men would finish top as they have the players who can damage the other two sides.

England Should Do Enough… But Little More

England, meanwhile, often struggle against lesser opposition at tournaments as they are not all that good at breaking down sides who are happy simply to defend. At the last World Cup in Brazil, England failed to beat Costa Rica, drawing 0-0. In South Africa in 2010 the Three Lions failed to roar, drawing 0-0 against Algeria and stumbling through to the knockout stages after an unconvincing 1-0 victory over Slovenia.

We think England will have just about what it takes to get enough points to progress, but we can’t see them topping the group so back Southgate’s men to finish second at betting odds of 5/4. If England can get off to a positive start against Tunisia on the 18th June, there is a chance they could build enough momentum to brush Panama aside and then give Belgium a real game of it in what will probably be the group winner decider. But all too often we have seen England bow to the pressure and flatter to deceive. We wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them draw the opening match 0-0 or 1-1 and edge a victory over Panama by a single goal.

An England bet we like the look of involves their main hitman, Harry Kane. You can back the Tottenham hotshot to be England’s top goalscorer in the World Cup at best odds of 11/10 with Bet365. Okay, not massive odds, but he delivers the goods consistently and we think he’s nailed on in this market.

Tunisia and Panama Battle to Avoid Wooden Spoon

Of the other two sides, we think Tunisia, who are at their fifth World Cup, will get the better of Panama, who are at their first. Panama battled their way to an impressive third place finish in the CONCACAF qualification group, behind Costa Rica and Mexico, but ahead of Honduras and the USA, thus securing their place at Russia 2018. But they are ranked just 55th in the world according to the latest FIFA figures, compared to 14th for Tunisia.

While Nabil Maaloul’s squad is not packed with household names, they have made it to the quarters of the Africa Cup of Nations in three of the last four renewals, which is no mean feat. They also beat Costa Rica in a friendly in March 2018, which is significant given that side beat Panama twice in qualifying.
