Who Are Favourites to Win 2020-21 Basketball Super League?
Anadolu Efes claimed their fourteenth Turkish basketball title at the end of the 2018-19 season and it looked as though the same team were going to be crowned champions last term before the season was cut short.
Ergin Ataman’s side had won 21 of their 23 games before the lockdown came in and they look like the team to beat this time around, although there’s an element of uncertainty considering that the competition has been postponed for such a length period.
Karşıyaka Basket have only won two Turkish Championships although they can be regarded as a main contender considering they were sitting second in the table this season, while Galatasaray S.K. are another giant of the sport in Turkey and we’re expecting them to have a strong season.
The History of the Basketbol Süper Ligi
Turkey is clearly a massive hotspot when it comes to the sport of basketball, with several of the teams in the Basketbol Süper Ligi qualifying for European competition, with the leading sides going through to play in the EuroLeague, the Champions League and FIBA Europe Cup among other competitions.
The Turkish Basketball Super League was founded in 1966 and Anadolu Efes are the most successful team when it comes to this competition, having landed fourteen titles although this can be an unpredictable outcome due to the BSL play-offs where eight teams battle it out as part of a knockout stage.
Up until the 1982-1983 season, the team who sat top of the Basketball Super League would end up being crowned champions, although Turkish basketball then changed the format so we had a play-off series from the 1983-1984 season onwards and that led to Efes Pilsen winning the competition.
Fenerbahce have also been prominent in this competition, winning on nine occasions and landing the runner-up spot a further nine times. They have experienced recent triumphs, with victories coming in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
