Hungary v Iceland tips

Hungary made it to the last sixteen of Euro 2016 after qualifying for their first European Championship since 1972 where they actually managed to land fourth place. The big question is whether they can overcome Iceland and be among the twenty-four teams in next summer’s finals providing that the tournament can still go ahead after initially being postponed by twelve months.

The Magyars claimed a 3-1 win away to Bulgaria in order to set up a grand final showdown for a Euro 2020 spot against an Iceland side who have risen to prominence thanks to their own exploits in recent major tournaments, most noticeably when dumping England out of Euro 2016 against the odds.

Are Hungary a Good Bet With Home Advantage?

Marco Rossi’s side stand on the verge of Euro 2020 and there was plenty to like about their performance in Sofia where the Hungarians really took the game to Bulgaria and deserved their 3-1 victory. We’re actually surprised that you can get odds as big as 13/8 about Hungary managing to win this game.

After all, there have been some really encouraging recent results and they claimed a goalless draw in Moscow when facing a decent Russia side and that came after they edged out Serbia to win 1-0 in Belgrade. They also won 1-0 away to Turkey in September and clearly have the knack of keeping things tight against decent opponents.

Although the Hungarians finished fourth out of five teams in their original Euro 2020 qualifying group, it should be noted that they won half of their eight games and definitely made home advantage count when beating Croatia and Wales in Budapest, with Slovakia the only team to get the better of them on home soil.

Can Iceland Make Team Spirit Count When it Matters?

Iceland are a small nation and it’s been a minor miracle that they’ve been able to go toe to toe with much bigger countries when it comes to international football, with the side now looking at qualifying for their third consecutive major tournament, with Erik Hamren steering the team to the verge of the European Championship next summer.

Goals from the reliable Gylfi Sigurdsson helped the Icelanders overcome Romania in the semi-finals of the play-offs, with the Everton midfielder scoring twice before the home side had to weather a second-half storm, with the team having to now head to Budapest and adjust to conditions in eastern Europe which could be tricky for the visitors.

Unfortunately for Iceland, that win over the Romanians sticks out like a sore thumb considering they have been losing matches hand over fist recently, although it should be noted that they are still in the top tier of the Nations League and it’s no shame that they are getting turned over by teams such as Belgium, Denmark and England, with the Three Lions only just edging them out.

What Are the Best Bets for this Game?

While both of the semi-final clashes involved plenty of goals, we’re not sure that this game will be particularly open considering what’s at stake? Hungary have made a habit of beating teams by a single goal and we wouldn’t put anyone off the idea of backing them to win, with the Asian Handicap giving us an opportunity to bet on them off scratch.

You could also have a bash at punting the Hungarians by a single goal and the 1-0 correct scoreline makes plenty of appeal, with Iceland having struggled for the past couple of years and they were always punching above their weight considering their relative resources.
