The Netherlands are hardly World Cup dark horses and were perhaps slightly fortunate that they were handed a group that included Qatar who were clearly nowhere near Pot 1 material. After beating Senegal 2-0 in their opener, the Dutch were always in pole position to go through as winners, although this could be a different kind of assignment against America.

Louis van Gaal’s side scored six goals during the group phase although it was interesting that they were largely nullified by Ecuador in their middle group game. On the flip side, this is turning out to be an excellent tournament for Cody Gakpo who has scored in three consecutive matches although the US defence could be a tough nut to crack.

The Americans were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in their opener, although they were full value for their goalless draw against England and they then kept another clean sheet when beating Iran 1-0. Captain Tyler Adams is a reassuring presence and forms a solid midfield along with Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah.

It’s likely that this will be a low-scoring clash and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if we saw a 0-0 draw and the tie going to extra-time. The States have a game plan which is working and they won’t be too fazed by a Netherlands side who were thwarted by Ecuador in the group stage. We would recommend looking at Under 2.5 Goals and even Under 1.5 Goals.
