The Pro 14 features – surprise, surprise! – 14 of the best rugby union sides from Wales, Ireland, Scotland and Italy. The idea was that combining the best teams from these countries would give them regular top class competition which would make it easier for them to compete against the top English and French sides.

The season runs from September to May, with sides playing home and away. The top four clubs at the end of the “normal” season meet in play-offs, in line with a number of other big union competitions. In the semi finals the side finishing top play fourth, with second and third meeting with the victors of those games meeting in the final.

The best sides from the Pro 14 qualify for the continental European Rugby Champions Cup, the “Champions League” of rugby that replaced the Heineken Cup. The top four sides from each country progress to the European Rugby Champions Cup, ensuring that at least one side from each nation qualifies. There are a further three places awarded according to final league standings.

The Pro 14 has had various names and structures since its original inception back in 2001 when it was known as the Celtic League and didn’t feature Italian sides. Italian clubs have struggled to make much headway since they were invited to take part in 2010.

Historically Irish clubs have been by far the most successful, with Wales next, mainly thanks to the Ospreys’ four titles. As of 2016 Scottish clubs have just one win, with Glasgow Warriors winning in 2015.

Amidst all this change one thing stays constant and that is that betting on the Pro 14 offers a huge amount of excitement. One of the most popular Pro 14 betting markets is on who will win the whole event and betting on the outright winner is a great option for those wanting a bet that they can enjoy all season.

Other outright bets, such as qualifying for the Champions Cup, finishing bottom or winning the regular season are also popular betting options. However, probably the most common bets on the Pro 14 come week to week. There are a huge range of games to bet throughout the long season and each game offers a good choice of markets, from match odds to handicap bets and tryscorer markets to half time options.
