UCL Accumulator: Huge European Night in Store for Liverpool and Tottenham

barcelona v tottenham – both teams to score

the difference in mood between the barcelona and tottenham players will be markedly different when they arrive at the camp nou on tuesday night. the barcelona players will be very relaxed having already confirmed their place in the round of 16 and secured a thumping 4-0 win in the city derby against espanyol at the weekend. tottenham had a good win of their own against leicester on saturday night but the pressure is on as they have just one more chance to qualify from group b.

spurs will book their place in the knockout stage if they secure at least as many points against barcelona as inter do against psv. our odds comparison shows just how big an ask this is for the premier league side but they are getting increasingly used to these big occasions and won’t be facing a full strength barcelona. this match really could go either way so both teams to score looks a relatively safe betting option at 4/9.

inter v psv - inter to win and both teams to score

every team wants a nice easy league match on the weekend before a crunch champions league game. unfortunately for inter milan they faced runaway serie a leaders, juventus. luciano spalletti’s men made life very difficult for juve on friday night but could not avoid going down to a narrow 1-0 defeat. it wasn’t the perfect preparation for tuesday’s match against psv and, as the football odds suggest, that match will be far from a template for their final group stage match.

psv know that they will finish bottom of group b whatever happens on tuesday but they should be proud of their campaign. save for the first match at the camp nou, psv have scored in each of their champions league matches and can do so again at san siro. their relative lack of quality will likely see the dutch side come up short as inter win a game in which both teams score – at odds of 8/5 – to keep the pressure up on tottenham.

liverpool v napoli - liverpool to win

tottenham aren’t the only premier league side facing an uphill task to qualify for the round of 16. liverpool’s return of just six points from five matches sees them heading into tuesday’s match against napoli outside of the two qualification positions and yet they still have a chance to finish top of the group.

napoli know that a point will see them through whilst they could also progress with a defeat subject to the score and how psg get on away against red star. that psg match is going to be critical for liverpool. if the parisians manage to win in belgrade (and the football betting odds suggest that they will) liverpool will either need to beat napoli 1-0 or by at least two goals. that’s a massive challenge against carlo ancelotti’s team but the home side should at least get the win at 8/13 in what should be an entertaining match.

shakhtar donetsk v lyon – over 2.5 goals

the vast majority of the teams who will make up the last 16 in the 2018-19 champions league have already been decided before the final round of fixtures but some still have it all to play for. all neutrals want a match between two contenders to enjoy and that’s just what we have with lyon’s trip to ukraine to take on shakhtar donetsk.

shakhtar must win the match to secure second place whereas a point would be enough for lyon. as the ligue 1 side cannot catch man city at the top of the group you might think that they would be content to employ a defensive game plan on wednesday night. that is just not in their makeup. bruno genesio’s men play football on the front foot and will exploit any space afforded to them by shakhtar’s attempts to score which makes a bet on over 2.5 goals at best betting odds of 8/15 a no brainer.

man city v hoffenheim – both teams to score

pep guardiola knew that things would not go 100% to plan this season even if his man city side have looked to be on a different level at times. guardiola must elicit a response from his players following their first loss of the campaign against chelsea on saturday night. ordinarily you would think that spells bad news for their next opponents but hoffenheim can travel to manchester without too much fear.

the german side have given it their best shot in the champions league but have come up short. the best they can hope for is a place in the europa league and they’ll hope that facing a rotated man city side gives them a shot. it’s a free hit for hoffenheim who have no problem playing attacking football so expect them to score. stopping man city at the other end is a different matter entirely though so the football odds available on both teams to score look generous at 4/5.

valencia v man united - under 2.5 goals

man united have a slim chance to finish top of group h and theoretically give themselves the best chance of a winnable tie in the round of 16. united will have to better juventus’s result against bottom side young boys when they take on valencia at the mestalla though. given that valencia battled to a 0-0 draw at old trafford and that man united have scored six goals in five european this season it’s unlikely that jose mourinho will send his team out with the freedom to carefree, attacking football.

valencia have had problems scoring enough goals themselves but have done enough to book their place in the europa league. there really is very little to play for in this one which is a shame for two big european teams but under 2.5 goals does stand out in our odds comparison at 10/11 making a very good final selection for our accumulator.

betting conclusions

the champions league group stage has already provided football fans with drama, upsets and some top class performances from the world’s best players. we are still promised some excellent entertainment from the final round of fixtures but much of the story in terms of qualification has already been sorted out.

the eyes of neutrals around the world will be focussed on the events at anfield on tuesday night where the attacking abilities of liverpool and napoli should ensure that both sets of fans cycle between hope, despair and delirium. the home side and premier league leaders are the worthy favourites whilst tottenham should make a good fist of their match at the camp nou. elsewhere lyon’s trip to ukraine should produce goals and there is profit to be made from the bookies with our other three bets which combine to produce an accumulator that, if successful, will pay out at 31/1.
