Match Betting (1x2)

Atletico Madrid couldn’t have received a much tougher Champions League last sixteen draw and they will aim to become the first team to knock Liverpool out of the European Cup since the 2018 final when Real Madrid triumphed against the Reds.

Atleti have largely been a permanent fixture in this competition over the past few years, with manager Diego Simeone having come desperately close to steering the Spanish side to Champions League glory, although he now has to contend without Diego Godin and Antoine Griezmann.

Even so, the Mattress Makers are among the best teams in Spain and they managed to come through the group stage after finishing second behind Juventus, with the team coming from two goals down against the Italian champions to draw 2-2.

Atletico also managed to beat Bayer Leverkusen and Lokomotiv Moscow without conceding a goal, with BetVictor offering an attractive 9/5 with BetVictor that the home side can glean some kind of first leg advantage in this contest.

Even so, there will be plenty of punters wanting to back Liverpool to triumph considering that Juve should really have held their advantage back in September.

The Reds are 6/4 with William Hill to enjoy a first leg victory and that would also mean they have at least one away goal on the board, with Jurgen Klopp fully aware of the important of getting this kind of advantage against wily opponents.

For the home side, a goalless draw wouldn’t be the worst possible outcome and Unibet have 23/10 that the game ends all square, with that keeping the tie in the balance when the teams clash swords at Anfield.

To Qualify

There’s little doubt that the bookmakers expect Liverpool to come through the two legs with flying colours and they will have an obvious second leg advantage at Anfield where the Merseyside team famously stormed back from 3-0 down against Barcelona last season.

Ladbrokes have 2/5 about the Reds winning the tie and going through to the quarter final stage of the tournament, while Atletico are 9/4 with Paddy Power to get the job done and perhaps Simeone will relish the chance to pit his wits and be the underdog once again.

Asian Handicap

If you want to back Liverpool to win but fancy having the insurance of money back should the game end in a draw, then BetVictor have 13/15 about the Reds off zero on the Asian Handicap market.

It’s not too often that the visitors lose in any competition, although it should be noted that they did lose away to Napoli earlier in the group stage and you can get an interesting 11/20 with Unibet about Atletico with half a goal advantage.

Both Teams to Score

The big question is how Atletico Madrid are going to approach this match. Will they simply shut up shop and aim to keep things tight against Liverpool rather than denying them space in behind? Or will they try to meet fire with fire?

Paddy Power have 8/11 about the “Yes” option on the Both Teams to Score betting market, with Liverpool always likely to be on the scoresheet and perhaps Atletico Madrid will need to be too.

However, the “No” option could be a more profitable bet considering the 0-0 scoreline could come into play and that is trading at 11/10 with BetVictor.
