France are the betting favourites to claim an opening victory at Euro 2024, with Didier Deschamps hoping to land his first European Championship success with a team who have reached the past two World Cup finals. Kylian Mbappe now captains the side and continues to be a reliable source of goals, with older players like Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann also involved.
As always, Deschamps has lots of squad depth and it’s often difficult when it comes to the selection process, with France having breezed through qualifying when landing seven wins and a draw from eight games played. They were able to score twenty-nine times and concede just three, although they were beaten in a friendly against Germany in September.
Seventeen-year-old Warren Zaire-Emery could have a breakthrough tournament if given the chance to make some appearances, with Khephren Thuram joining brother Marcus Thuram in the squad for the qualifier against Greece. There are lots of exciting attacking players within the group and Austria might struggle to contain their opponents.
However, the outsiders might consider this a good time to be playing the fixture and there is plenty of experience in the ranks. Marko Arnautovic is now operating for Inter Milan and has well over 100 caps, while Marcel Sabitzer scored some important goals in qualifying and the Borussia Dortmund midfielder is flanked by the likes of Xaver Schlager and Christoph Baumgartner.
