2017 UEFA Euro U21 Championship Betting Odds Preview

2017 UEFA Euro U21 Championship Betting Odds Preview

the 2017 uefa european under-21 championship gets underway this friday in poland. over the next two weeks, 12 nations will be battling it out for euro domination, with stefan kuntz’s germany and albert celades’ spain among the pre-tournament favourites.

after watching the u20 side lift the u20 fifa world cup last weekend, aidy boothroyd’s england will be looking to emulate their success. paul simpson’s men were outstanding out in south korea and their brilliant performances are sure to have inspired boothroy’s slightly older group.

the young lions get the competition up and running with a tough looking fixture against sweden at the kolporter stadium in kielce on friday. if they can get off to a fast start, they could go far.

with our live odds comparison, predictions, best odds and betting tips, we’ll be previewing all three groups. who will make it through to the knockout stages? who will be crowned u21 european champions on 30th june? most importantly of all, what should you be betting on?

group a: young lions to roar through

group a consists of hosts poland, slovakia, sweden and england. all four countries have a genuine chance of making it through to the knockout stages, although the english are the slight favourites to win the group.

like we said, england play sweden in the tournament opener on friday night, before the hosts welcome slovakia to the arena lublin later in the evening. on 19th june, the young lions play slovakia, as poland and sweden square off. the english wrap group a up with a fixture with the poles three days later and that one could be decisive.

looking at our live odds comparison, this group is wide open. england may be the favourites, but there’s hardly anything to split sweden, poland and slovakia for the runners-up spot. the swedes are available at 10/3 (betway), whilst betfair are offering you the decent betting odds of 4/1 for the host nation to come out on top in the group. meanwhile, betway have the slovaks priced at 6/1 and whilst they are outsiders they will certainly feel they have a real chance.

bet365’s 13/10 for boothroyd’s boys to win the group is just too good to turn down. if england can get off to a good start against the blue-yellow on friday, we believe they will go on and win group a with ease. england have generally been strong at this age group and we think their class and experience make odds of 13/10 great value.

group b: portuguese to beat spain to top spot

portugal, serbia, spain and macedonia are the four sides making up group b. portugal and serbia meet in bydgoszcz on june 17th, with spain and macedonia squaring off in gdynia a few hours later.

the second round of fixtures sees serbia play macedonia, with the two favourites – portugal and spain – doing battle on 20th june in what will surely be the key game. the macedonians then meet portugal at the stadion gosir, whilst serbia and spain square off at the kompleks sportowy zawisza on june 23rd.

not only are the spanish even money (betway) favourites to win their group, only germany are fancied ahead of spain to win the euros outright. from youth level to senior, la roja have an outstanding squad of players to choose from. standing in their way in group b, however, are portugal, who are priced at odds of 15/8 (betfair) to finish in pole position.

in truth, it looks a two-horse race between spain and portugal for top spot in group b, with serbia available at 15/2 with betway and macedonia out at 16/1 at bet365 on our odds comparison.

between the spanish and portuguese, we believe there’s better value in betfair’s 15/8 for rui jorge’s portugal to come out on top. it will no doubt be tight, but the match between the two on 20th june could turn out to be pivotal, with the winner going through as group winners.

group c: germans too strong for the rest

lastly, group c is made up by germany, czech republic, denmark and italy, another strong foursome. the tournament favourites germany kick their campaign off with a game against the czechs in tychy on 18th june. meanwhile, denmark and italy begin their tournament in the stadion cracovia, krakow the same day.

a few days after that, czech republic meet italy, while germany and denmark go head-to-head in krakow. kuntz’s germany play luigi di bagio’s italians in their last fixture, as the danes meet the czechs at the stadion miejski in the final group game of the tournament on 24th june.

although the italians will no doubt push germany all the way, it’s very difficult to envisage any other nation winning group c. similarly to spain, the germans are incredibly strong at all levels, with the u21 side capable of giving many senior teams a run for their money.

according to our live odds comparison, germany are, of course, the group favourites, with betfair’s evens being your best price. then come italy at 3/1 with betway, whilst denmark are 6/1 (bet365), with czech republic also at 6/1 with betway.

obviously, anything is possible in football, especially at this level. however, we can’t see any country getting in germany’s way in group c, so betfair’s evens for the germans to top the lot and take the direct route through to the semi-finals is well worth having a punt on.

2017 uefa euro u21 championship winner: germany to prevail in poland

we predict the likes of germany, spain, portugal, italy and england to go far in poland. even the poles themselves are capable of surprising a few people, and could be worth having a small nibble on as a 16/1 each way outsider with bet365.

as we touched on, though, germany and spain seem the outstanding teams in the tournament and, as long as they win their respective groups, could be a good bet to meet in the final in krakow on 30th june.

it’s always interesting to see how england fare in tournaments, at any level. boothroyd has a very capable squad of players at his disposal, who can certainly cause one or two problems for the big boys along the way. the english are worth a punt to qualify from their group as winners and from there anything is possible. the best odds you can get on england to lift the trophy are 9/1 with bet365.

however, we can’t see past the germans in poland. they no doubt have one of the strongest squads in this competition, with several of their players already playing regular football for their club sides in europe’s top leagues. we feel it’s a given that germany will get the better of italy, denmark and czech republic in group c, so betfair’s tempting odds of 4/1 for the germans to win the euro under-21 tournament outright are just too good to turn down.
