French Open 2017 Tennis Betting Tips: Who Will Win the Title?

28/05/2017 11:15

as we head towards a great summer of sport, the french open represents the second major tennis event of the season. wimbledon may be just around the corner, but focus will first be on the men and women’s singles at roland garros. the competition runs from may 28th until june 10th, with a week of qualifying before that. just who will take the biggest title on clay? could a resurgent rafael nadal return to winning ways at this event?

ahead of this year’s french open, we’ve taken a look at the form and the latest odds to put together our predictions. you can see the latest betting tips and odds here, as we look to land a couple of winners over the next few weeks. with some big odds available via our live odds comparison on both sides of the singles, we’re confident that we’ve found a few great value picks ahead of the tournament.

french open (men’s) betting tips and odds

there’s a slight shift at the top of the betting odds ahead of the tournament, with rafael nadal back in as odds-on favourite. he can be backed at best betting odds of 5/6 with ladbrokes to walk away with a 10th french open crown. novak djokovic follows him in the betting, although he’s been slightly out of form which has seen him drift to 10/3 with sky bet.

the big change this year is that dominic thiem and stan wawrinka sit in the top four with the bookies, ahead of andy murray. however, wawrinka can be backed as high as 14/1 ahead of the tournament, which shows the odds men fancy this is a two- or possibly three-horse race. there are a few other options, however, which we think represent good value in the running. however, this time around we’re swerving any of the traditional big names who are usually expected to dominate the slams.

djokovic has not looked himself of late, putting in a poor display against rafael nadal in madrid, and coming up short in the rome open final. murray has lost as many matches as he has won since march. nadal is in great form, but his 17 match winning streak saw him face just one top five ranked player, before losing to thiem.

as such, we think thiem is worth backing for this tournament, following his win over nadal in italy. the austrian also made the final of the madrid and barcelona opens, losing both to nadal. overcoming the spaniard in that game could be huge, and we expect thiem to kick on here. he was a semi-finalist at roland garros 12 months ago, and we are backing him to push for the title at nice odds of 9/1 with coral.

we also suggest taking advantage of a giant price on world number 8 marin cilic. he’s out at 150/1 with betfair to win the tournament, despite already having a grand slam under his belt. he’s recently won on clay, taking the istanbul open title, while he’s been impressive on second serves this term. at that giant price, there is a lot of value for an each way punt.
tip 1 - thiem at 9/1 with coral
tip 2 - cilic each way at 150/1 with betfair.

french open (women’s) betting tips and odds

while the men’s draw boasts an odds-on favourite in the current betting, the women’s draw seems a lot less certain. with wta number 1 angelique kerber out at 18/1 with betfred, there are clearly some big prices in this field. the odds comparison puts simona halep as 7/2 favourite with sky bet. that’s bigger than the two main favourites for the men’s title, and there’s a good case to be made for swerving halep at any price here.

the favourite is in good form, but her grand slam record just doesn’t back up her current price. the romanian made the final at roland garros back in 2014, which proved to be the last occasion she made it to the final day of any slam. she has made just two semi-finals from 11 attempts since, which is far from the consistency needed to win this title. having won just four matches at this tournament in the last two years, along with exiting the australian open at the first round, halep offers no value here.

the latest betting odds put halep, garbine muguruza and elina svitolina above the rest, those are the only three priced at 10/1 or lower. we can rule out reigning champion muguruza, as no one has retained the women’s title at roland garros since 2007, and we don’t think that’s likely to happen with no standout champion. the event seems very open, which makes it a difficult one to retain.

that leaves us with svitolina, who recently won the rome open after beating both halep and muguruza on route to victory. that was her second clay court success of the season, which marks her out as the value pick in our book at 8/1 with william hill.

there aren’t too many potential dark horses than we can spot in this year’s tournament, but eugenie bouchard might be worth backing. she’s not been at her best for a while, but she is capable of brilliance on her day. she showed that by beating world number 1 kerber and maria sharapova in the madrid open, and her price of 50/1 with bet365 is tempting. you can expect those odds to drop significantly if she gets a couple of wins under her belt.

be sure to check these prices and those for all the players in our live odds comparison. there you can find the latest prices on all of our betting tips and predictions. it’s also the best way to catch all betting odds, ensuring you always get the best returns for your correct predictions. in a packed field like the french open, using our odds comparison could be the difference between a good win and a great one.
tip 1 - svitolina at 8/1 with william hill
tip 2 - bouchard each way at 50/1 with bet365
