A few seasons ago, it was pretty customary for Barcelona to be installed as betting favourites to win the Champions League. However, it’s a reflection of how much their stock has fallen when you see they’re trading at 20/1 or bigger to win this season’s competition and it’s hard to make a strong case for a Catalan side who can no longer call upon Lionel Messi.

Antoine Griezmann has also departed the club on loan to his beloved Atletico Madrid, with Barca the betting outsiders to win this Champions League opener against a Bayern Munich team who have the tools to claim a victory and the bookies have them as warm favourites to return to Bavaria with the points.

Julian Nagelsmann is hoping to repeat the act of his predecessor Hansi Flick and win this hallowed piece of silverware with a talented group and there have been some high-scoring wins already this season, including a 5-0 demolition of Hertha Berlin before the international break which showed the team at their attacking best.

While it used to be a dangerous act to oppose Barcelona in any game, let alone a home clash, we feel as though Ronald Koeman’s side might struggle to contain such lively opponents, with the home side having a limited squad after some notable departures.
