2017 Confederations Cup Betting Odds Preview

the 2017 fifa confederations cup takes place in russia from 17th june to 2nd july. with the 2018 fifa world cup kicking off in a year’s time, this competition starts the countdown to the world’s biggest international tournament.

the confed cup is split into two groups of four, with the likes of germany, portugal, chile, russia and mexico all taking part. the world cup holders germany and the uefa euro 2016 winners portugal are the pre-tournament favourites, but don’t be too surprised to see one or two other nations causing shocks along the way.

in the 2013 tournament in brazil, the hosts came out on top, beating spain 3-0 in the final at the estadio do maracana in rio de janeiro. that particular competition didn’t disappoint, we’re hoping for more of the same from the 2017 version.

we’ll be providing the best odds from our live odds comparison, as well as various predictions and tips in our in-depth preview.

group a: portuguese to prevail

russia, new zealand, portugal and mexico meet in group a. the russians kick their tournament off with a fixture against nz in saint petersburg on saturday 17th june. the following day, the portuguese begin their campaign against mexico at the hazan arena, kazan. as expected, russia and portugal are the strong favourites to kick off with wins.

the standout match in group a takes place on wednesday 21st june, as stanislav cherchesov’s russia welcome fernando santos’ portugal to the otkrytiye arena in moscow. the winner of that could go a long way to deciding who will come out on top in group a. a few hours later, mexico and new zealand square off in sochi.

the final round of fixtures see the mexicans take on the host nation in kazan, while new zealand meet the portuguese on 24th june. the winner of the group will play the runners-up in group b in the kazan arena on 28th june.

santos’ men, who produced heroics in france last summer to lift their first european championship, are the favourites to prevail in group a, with bet365 offering 10/11 for them to come out on top. however, on their way to euro 2016 glory, a seleccao drew all three of their group fixtures to end on three points from a possible nine.

meanwhile, according to the live odds comparison, the russians and mexicans are joint second favourites, with betvictor pricing the pair at 5/2. new zealand, who are without doubt the weakest link in the group, are available at the huge odds of 100/1 (bet365) to win group a.

we believe the portuguese will be too strong for the likes of russia and mexico in this group. they proved in last summer’s euros that they have what it takes to get the job done. because of that, taking advantage of bet365’s 10/11 for the current european champions to finish first in group a is the way to go.

group b: germans too hot to handle for chile

cameroon, chile, australia and germany are the four countries contesting group b. on sunday, the world champions get their tournament underway with a game against the australians at the fisht olympic stadium. while those two are battling it out in sochi, cameroon and chile go head-to-head in the russian capital 24 hours later.

the germans, who are rightly the group b favourites, then face chile in kazan, before ending their group campaign against cameroon in sochi on 25th june. juan antonio pizzi’s chileans, who are second favourites to finish in pole position in group b, play australia in moscow in the final group match of the tournament.

in truth, we believe it will be a two-horse race between the germans and chile for the no. 1 position in this group. joachim low’s men, who have the superb habit of winning football matches, are priced at the tempting odds of evens with betvictor to win group b.

their closest challengers will undoubtedly be the chileans, who won the copa america in 2015 and ’16. looking at our odds comparison, the best price you can get on la roja beating germany to top spot in the group are 11/8 with william hill, which could be worth having a small punt on with the germans naming a young squad here.

in terms of a potential outsider, we believe cameroon, the 2017 african cup of nations winners, are best suited to cause germany and chile problems along the way. the indomitable lions are priced at 7/1 with william hill to shock the favourites by claiming top spot in group b.

out of the two groups, this one is certainly the more fascinating. however, if low’s team are on song, how can anyone stop them? with an exceptional squad of players to choose from, the germans have strength in depth that the other seven participating teams could only wish for. therefore, although they are priced at just evens, we still believe backing germany to win group b in russia is the right choice of bet as we predict their young stars will shine.

2017 fifa confederations cup outright winner

like we said, there’s not a lot to split germany and portugal in the betting on who will become the outright 2017 confederation cup winner. with the duo expected to win their respective groups, there’s a good chance these two will contest the final at the krestovsky stadium in saint petersburg on 2nd july.

germany were outstanding at the last world cup, with mario gotze’s extra-time goal enough to see off argentina in the final in rio three years ago. however, their best result in a confederations cup is third place in 2005, when they lost 3-2 to brazil in the semi-final, before beating mexico 4-3 (a.e.t) in the third place play-off in leipzig.

portugal, meanwhile, will be taking part in their first confed cup tournament, as last year’s euro success was their maiden major trophy. whether that’s a good or bad thing remains to be seen, but the way they recovered from a poor group stage to win euro 2016 speaks volumes of this current crop of portuguese players, led, of course, by cristiano ronaldo.

chile have certainly surprised a few people in tournaments over the past few years, and they could be a force to be reckoned with in russia. they are without doubt germany and portugal’s biggest threat, with betway not giving a lot away with their price of 10/3 for pizzi’s men to prevail in the final on 2nd july. the hosts, meanwhile, are available at 9/1 with betfair to cause a shock on home soil and come out on top.

with all that said, though, we still can’t see past germany lifting the trophy in saint petersburg. whether it’s the euros, world cup or confederations cup, the germans head into every game expecting to triumph, as they are born winners. because of that, our pick to win the 2017 confederations cup is the current world cup holders, with betvictor’s 9/4 being your best price.
