Liverpool v Tottenham Match Result
Liverpool have only lost three games all season. The first was at home to Nottingham Forest in their only Premier League reverse of the campaign. The third was a recent Champions League dead rubber against PSV Eindhoven, although the one in between was a 1-0 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday 8 January in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.
A late winner from Lucas Bergvall means that Spurs are heading to Anfield with a slender advantage on Thursday night. There was some controversy over whether the teenager should have still been on the field by that stage, although Ange Postecoglou will be desperate for his team to now go on and reach the Wembley final.
Despite Tottenham’s advantage, they are the big outsiders to qualify for the Carabao Cup showdown, with the London side having lost seven of their twelve away games in the Premier League this term. However, they did land a somewhat unexpected victory at Brentford at the weekend.
The big problem is how Tottenham will stop Liverpool from scoring and the latter were a team who registered a 6-3 success at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in December. Arne Slot’s side are enormous favourites to win the game, with Mohamed Salah having arguably his best ever season in a red shirt and there’s a genuine threat being posed by Cody Gakpo.
We think that if you’re looking to back Liverpool to land a victory, it might be worth going for a win with both teams to score. We think something like a 4-1 or 4-2 triumph in favour of the Merseyside outfit could be worth considering, with Tottenham surely unable to set up defensively for this sort of encounter.
Goals Under/Over
Over 2.5 Goals is a very likely outcome according to the football betting sites. The bookies actually make Over 3.5 Goals an odds-on chance which is unusual for a game and it should be noted that the first leg encounter only featured a single goal. However, it’s highly unlikely that the next ninety minutes will follow the same trend.
The big issue is that Tottenham will surely not rest on their laurels and aim to defend. Liverpool are also a team that can score in high volume and they have racked up sixty goals in the space of twenty-three encounters, with Mohamed Salah a man on fire for the Merseyside outfit.
Odds of 2.50 are available that there are Over 4.5 Goals and it could end up being a shootout at both ends, with at least five needing to be scored in order for the wager to land on this one.
BTTS
Although Liverpool are big favourites for a victory, there’s still a consensus from the bookies that both teams are likely to find the net. Tottenham will adopt an attacking approach in search of more goals and don’t forget that they managed to register a 4-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium earlier in this campaign.
Liverpool recently came away from Bournemouth with a 2-0 victory although their previous three games had all featured both teams scoring. That includes Lille, Ipswich and PSV scoring although they might run a tighter ship considering that conceding the first goal of this encounter would leave them with a big obstacle to overcome.
Even so, we can see a scenario where the Reds lead in the tie and it will then be on Tottenham to try and find ways to score. The visitors have managed a solid twenty-one goals in their twelve away clashes, with Son Heung-Min looking sharp as part of Sunday’s 2-0 victory at Brentford.
However, Liverpool concede less than one goal per home game on average and perhaps they’ll be able to pull off a bloodless win here.
First Goalscorer
It’s now twenty-five goals in all competitions this season for the irrepressible Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian King was on target with two goals at Bournemouth on Saturday and he’s the man most likely to find the net in the game. We know he’ll be selected for this game before being rested for an FA Cup weekend trip to Plymouth.
It’s likely that Salah will be flanked by Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz, both of whom will offer a threat from the wide positions. The Dutchman now has fifteen in all competitions and could offer a bigger priced alternative to Salah, while Diaz has twelve to his name this term although the Colombian has failed to find the net in his previous seven games in all competitions.
As for Tottenham, they clearly carry an attacking threat and perhaps Son Heung-Min is the player most likely to bag for the London outfit. The South Korea has had a somewhat disappointing season in front of goal and scored only thirteen goals in all competitions although he was recently on target with two against Hoffenheim in Europe.
