Real Sociedad v Atletico Madrid Betting Tips

There are some interesting La Liga match odds for the tussle between Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid on 4 January. Despite a lowly position in the table, the bookies certainly give the home team more than a puncher's chance of landing a victory. They will hope to make home advantage count at the Reale Arena although there have been three victories, a draw and four defeats.

Pellegrino Matarazzo has seen some improvement in recent weeks. There was a five-game unbeaten run between 19 October and 22 November which saw Real claim three wins and two draws to bolster their points tally. More recently, there have been a few wobbles. There was a home reverse against Villarreal and that was followed by reverses against Alaves and Girona.

A 1-1 draw at Levante on 20 December steadied the ship but nothing more. They were cancelled out in the last minute by a penalty and will now have had a winter break in order to improve fortunes. It's a tricky opener for 2026 but they'll draw heart from the fact that Atletico Madrid have only won 33% of their home clashes this term.

Atleti may have won eight and drawn one of their nine home games but it's been a different story on the road. 2025 ended with quite a bang for the Madrid side considering that they racked up four straight wins. This includes a 2-1 success against Valencia before a 3-0 triumph away to Girona.

On that occasion, they proved too strong for their opponents, scoring with half of their shots on target. Simeone won't have wanted the winter break with his team in such decent nick although we're leaning towards the away win here.

Goals Under/Over

As with many Atletico Madrid games, Under 2.5 Goals is trading as the favourite. According to the La Liga betting sites, there's a roughly 60% chance that we'll see a maximum of two being registered. There have been a sum total of twenty goals scored across nine away games featuring Simeone's side and they do have a tendency to try and run a tight ship on the road.

However, all four Atletico matches going into the winter break featured three goals or more. There was a 3-2 Champions League success away to PSV and that 3-0 win over Girona, with the team looking to get among the goals against a Sociedad side who have been involved in high-scoring encounters.

We've seen the net bulge twenty-five times across eight home games involving Real and that probably makes Over 2.5 Goals the best betting option based on the stats and value.

BTTS

There's nothing to split the BTTS Yes and BTTS No odds right now. The last meeting was in May 2025 where Atletico Madrid won a very one-sided contest. Alexander Sorloth scored an incredible four goals as part of a 4-0 victory where Simeone's side had seven shots on target and limited their opponents to just one.

However, the reverse fixture was a lot closer and ended in a 1-1 scoreline. Luka Sucic cancelled out Julian Alvarez's opener and it was Sociedad who dominated in terms of shots on target. They had seven to their opponents' one and also registered nine shots off target, with the team likely to be refreshed and ready for goals. We are leaning towards the BTTS Yes outcome and think it could be worth including in a Bet Builder.

Atletico Madrid will surely regard this as a fixture which they can target with a victory considering that their opponents have already lost to four different opponents. We might also expect an open game considering that six opponents have hosted Atleti and engineered a positive result. An away win and BTTS Yes was proving a profitable wager going into Christmas.

First Goalscorer

Julian Alvarez has been a solid source of goals since arriving at Atletico Madrid from Manchester City. The Argentine has eleven in all competitions and could be the player to break the deadlock at the Reale Arena. Alexander Sorloth hasn't been as prolific although we can't ignore the fact that the Norwegian pilfered four goals against the same opponents last term.

Antoine Griezmann continues to be a dangerous operator and he went into Christmas scoring in three consecutive matches. The Frenchman was on target against Valencia, Baleares and Girona, with the forward likely to pose a few problems and the same applies to the dependable Conor Gallagher.

As for Real Sociedad, Mikel Oyarzabal has been the talisman for this team and the Spanish international could be worth considering on the anytime scorer market. He had a recent three game scoring run which included goals against Elche, Georgia and Turkey, with the latter two opponents being for Spain where he demonstrates his ability.

Croatian Luka Sucic can't be ignored at a bigger price and young Mikel Goti will be looking to make a lasting impression if he's given an opportunity by the manager.
