The 2020 UEFA European Football Championship takes place between 12 June – 12 July, with twenty-four teams competing across twelve host cities and it’s sure to be a betting extravaganza.

The Euro 2020 outright betting market is a sight for sore eyes. There are no less than six teams who are trading at single figure odds to win the trophy, with England among them and we look at the leading contenders for the tournament.

Teams in the Play-Offs

There are four teams who can still qualify for Euro 2020 and there are four Paths where several nations will compete in a bid to claim their spot.

Path A

Bulgaria clash with Hungary and the winner of this tie will then face either Iceland or Romania for a place in the Euro 2020 finals.

Path B

Northern Ireland travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the winner of that match-up clashing with either Slovakia or Republic of Ireland. It means we could see an all-Ireland clash.

Path C

Norway have home advantage against Serbia and will hope to come through that tie, while the winner will square off against Scotland or Israel for a place in the Euro 2020 finals.

Path D

One of Georgia, Belarus, North Macedonia or Kosovo are going to be playing at the Euro 2020 finals, with these lower-ranked teams benefitting from the Nations League.

France Favourites to Win Euro 2020

It was the French who won the 2018 World Cup in Russia and it’s hardly surprising that Didier Deschamps’ side head the outright betting market to win Euro 2020. After all, the manager retains virtually the same squad that were champions of the world and they’ve been very defensively strong during qualifying when only conceding three goals.

The 2018 World Cup saw Kylian Mbappe truly announce himself on the global stage and the Paris Saint-Germain forward should once again be a hot property, with the player likely to operate in tandem with Antoine Griezmann.

Paul Pogba’s club situation remains mysterious considering he has barely featured for Manchester United, although he’s likely be vying for a midfield berth along with N’Golo Kante, Blaise Matuidi and Moussa Sissoko.

Can England Finally Win a Major Tournament?

England fans will scoff at the idea that the Three Lions can win Euro 2020 considering there have been so many disappointments when it comes to playing at a major tournament, although the bottom line is that Gareth Southgate steered the team to the semi-final stage of the 2018 World Cup two years ago.

England are currently 5/1 to win the European Championship and they have a squad bulging with talented young players including Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho. However, a recent 2-1 defeat away to Czech Republic suggests that there are defensive frailties which still need to be addressed.

Belgium Look Massive at 13/2

The Belgians have only made five European Championship appearances although there’s little doubt that they arrive at Euro 2020 as one of the favourites to win the tournament. The Red Devils gave a good account of themselves when reaching the semi-final stage of the 2018 World Cup and were slightly unlucky to lose to France.

Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne are among the best players in the world and can drive the team forward, while there’s plenty of options when it comes to the attacking berths and that includes Romelu Lukaku and Dries Mertens, while the team also look defensively strong and qualifying has been a routine affair for Roberto Martinez’s men.

Netherlands Enjoying a Renaissance

The Netherlands are over the line as far as Euro 2020 qualification is concerned, with Ronald Koeman having drastically improved the fortunes of his national side after the team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

The former Everton manager has benefitted from having Virgil van Dijk captaining the team and the Liverpool defender can lay claim to being the best in his position on the planet, while he forms a solid partnership with Matthijs de Ligt, with Frenkie de Jong now turning out for Barcelona and we’re expecting a confident showing from the Dutch.

Germany and Spain Have Done it Before

Germany came a cropper in the 2018 World Cup and bombed out at the group stage, although Die Mannschaft are going to be lining up at Euro 2020 and there have been significant changes to the set-up under Joachim Low to keep them fresh and capable of challenging.

The Germans tend to have a strong track record when it comes to major competitions and they are likely to be dangerous in that Timo Werner and Serge Gnabry are dangerous operators in attack, while there are several Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund players in the squad.

Similarly, Spain are going to be a tough team to beat and it’s strange that La Roja have become something of the forgotten side although it feels as though they’ve been a waning star in recent years and perhaps they can be overlooked for this tournament.
