Lyon v Marseille Match Result
Some might think that the 2.75 about Lyon winning this football match is too big. After all, the Les Gones have enjoyed two wins so far this season to begin the campaign in style. There was firstly a slender 1-0 victory away to Lens where Georges Mikautadze struck on the stroke of half-time. Some solid defending got them over the line here.
Then came a more convincing victory. There was a 3-0 success against Metz where Paulo Fonseca’s side were able to outplay their opponents. Malick Fofana and Corentin Tolisso gave the team a 2-0 half-time lead before Adam Karabec put further gloss on the scoreline, although a tougher assignment now awaits Lyon.
Marseille completely bossed possession away to Rennes in their opener, having over 72% of possession before losing 1-0. They struggled to get shots on target although this wasn’t the case against Paris in their first home match. Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were both on the scoresheet to help the team land a 5-2 success.
Les Olympiens are now favourites to follow up that win with a victory away to Lyon. However, the feeling is that this will be a close match. Perhaps the draw offers the best value. Lyon were able to win eleven and draw two of their seventeen home clashes last term and they were largely difficult to beat on home soil.
Due to Marseille slipping up in their opening encounter, it might not pay to back them for a first away success here. There was only eight points separating the two teams last season in the final standings. Considering that Lyon have home advantage in this clash, that could lead to the game ending honours even.
Goals Under/Over
There’s a 62% chance of Over 2.5 Goals being scored in the clash between Lyon and Marseille. There was only one goal scored by the home side away to Lens when winning before notching three against Metz. Similarly, Marseille’s first match of the season featured just one goal although that was before a seven-goal thriller against Paris.
It should be noted that Paris are one of the weaker teams in Ligue 1 and they are one of the new boys to the French top flight. They finished second in Ligue 2 last term and might find life difficult against the leading teams. We should expect Lyon to defend a lot better and this was a side that only conceded forty-six goals last term.
There’s also the fact that the home side would actually feel a draw is a positive outcome after landing two wins. Perhaps Marseille will be hugely attacking in the sense that they’ll feel as though they don’t want to drop any further points.
BTTS
There’s a 65% chance of both teams finding the net according to the Ligue 1 betting odds. Last season’s games between these sides suggest that the net will bulge at both ends. Last February, we saw Marseille claim an exciting 3-2 victory where all five goals were notched in the second half of this encounter.
There were a sum total of fifteen shots on target in that clash and eleven of them came from Marseille. The reverse fixture in September also ended 3-2 in favour of Marseille. Despite receiving an early red card, the visiting team were able to leave with an unlikely triumph although it’s interesting that fourteen shots on target were registered here.
The previous two encounters saw BTTS No happen. There was a 1-0 win for Lyon at their own ground and a 3-0 success for Marseille. We think that BTTS Yes is a likely outcome considering that both sides will have their focus on landing three points. The fact that there were seven goals scored when Les Olympiens were both in action means that we can include this in our Ligue 1 Bet Builder.
First Goalscorer
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been a goal-getter for the majority of his career. The Gabon forward scored twice against Paris last weekend and will be aiming to stay fit this season. He has only started thirty-one times for Marseille since arriving two seasons ago although he’s generally able to find the net when he’s on the pitch.
Mason Greenwood is on penalty duties and the former Manchester United was on target against Paris. The 23-year-old managed to score twenty-one times for Marseille last time out and could offer a lively threat. However, there are dangers for Lyon lurking around every corner.
The home side have had four different scorers thus far. Georges Mikautadze is someone who has been getting plenty of minutes on the pitch and he proved to be the match winner at Lens. The team didn’t have anyone who managed a double figure tally last term, although Malick Fofana is a 20-year-old with a bright future. The Belgian was among the scorers against Metz and he’s now truly broken into the first team.
