What is the Danish Superliga?
The Danish Superliga is a leading European football division, with the season kicking off in early July and running through until the end of May. In December, there is a big winter break, with fourteen teams competing throughout the season and that means each team play a sum total of twenty-six matches.
After these twenty-six matches, the Superliga table is then split between the top six and the bottom eight, with the top six playing in the Championship round which involves another ten rounds of games and it’s been FC Copenhagen who have come out on top over the past few seasons.
The bottom eight teams are involved in a relegation round and they are split into two groups of four before the top two from each group play in the European play-off quarter-finals and the bottom two play in the relegation play-offs.

The History of the Denmark Superliga
The Danish Superliga was founded in 1991 and effectively replaced the Danish 1st Division, with FC Copenhagen having been the most successful team in the past few years. FCK won the 2018-19 title after previously being crowned champions in 2016 and 2017, while they also lifted the Danish title on nine occasions between 2001 – 2013.
The first division of football in Denmark was really inaugurated in 1912 and it was KB or Kjøbenhavns Boldklub who were initially the most successful club, with the team having landed six titles by 1925.
In the 1960’s, we saw Esbjerg rise to prominence and they enjoyed a consecutive hat-trick of successes between 1961 – 1963, while KB won their last ever Danish first division title in 1980 before fading away. In 1985, Brondby would be crowned champions for the first time and this would set the wheels in motion for them to become one of the biggest clubs in Denmark.
There were consecutive victories in 1987 and 1988, before the same thing happened in 1990 and 1991. Two years later and FC Copenhagen would triumph for the first time and they traded blows with Brondby before establishing themselves as the leading club.
