Mexico v South Africa Betting Markets

According to the odds, Mexico have a roughly 70% chance of landing a victory in this Group A opener on 11 June. The stage is set at the Estadio Azteca for a clash between one of the co-hosts and a proud African nation who will be determined not to make up the numbers.

The Mexicans have been unbeaten in 2026 at the time of writing. They claimed friendly wins away to Panama and Bolivia before a comprehensive 4-0 home victory over Iceland. They then demonstrated their mettle with goalless draws against Portugal and Belgium before a 2-0 success over Ghana.

Javier Aguirre will have been happy with his team's form and they won the Gold Cup last summer although there were a few bumps in the road last term including a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Colombia. There could also be some nerves on display when lining up against a South Africa side desperate not to lose their opening match.

Bafana Bafana were able to finish top of their World Cup qualifying group ahead of Nigeria when winning five and drawing three of their ten clashes. More recently, they only made it to the last sixteen stage of AFCON 2026 before being beaten by Cameroon and the recent results have included a draw and a defeat against Panama.

It's likely to be a fairly defensive set-up for the African side in their hope of nullifying opponents whose squad will gradually be trimmed down. We know that Fenerbahce's Edson Alvarez will lead out the team and will be flanked by the equally experienced Orbelin Pineda. There's also Fulham's Raul Jimenez who is a decorated striker who is heading towards the fifty-goal mark for his country.

Goals Under/Over

The feeling among the World Cup betting sites is that this could be a fairly low-scoring clash. The odds for Under 2.5 Goals is trading marginally shorter than Over 2.5 Goals and that is understandable. For Mexico, a victory needs to be achieved at any cost and there's reason for thinking that El Tri can run a tight ship defensively.

Manager Javier Aguirre will draw confidence from that 2-0 win over Ghana in Puebla where goals from Gutierrez and Martinez helped them succeed against the Black Pearls. That came after showing defensive solidity to draw 0-0 against Portugal and that came before a 1-1 scoreline against the Belgians.

The Mexican defence should hold tight against a South Africa side who were only able to score a solitary goal against Panama on both occasions that they played them. We're not expecting the visitors to create many scoring chances.

BTTS

Based on available evidence, it's easy to go for a Mexico win and BTTS No. The latter option is trading at 1.66 but can be combined with a home victory to achieve a much bigger price. We know that the conditions will be warm in Mexico City and that the home team will want to put on a show for the supporters in the stadium.

Traditionally, opening matches of tournaments tend to be fairly cagey. The world is watching the game and teams don't want to make mistakes where they can be helped. We're not sure that South Africa will carry too much of an attacking threat. There's not a huge amount of goals within the current squad.

Lyle Foster of Burnley has a respectable ten goals in twenty-six appearances for his country and might lead the line for his country, with every other forward playing in the South African top flight instead. Indeed, the same applies to virtually every other squad member and it could be that veteran keeper Ronwen Williams is in for a busy evening.

First Goalscorer

Raul Jimenez will surely play in his final World Cup and the Mexican forward could go out with a bang. The Fulham forward has been effective in the English Premier League for much of his career and he has a healthy 44 goals across 123 games for El Tri. Beyond this, the other Mexico forwards are not renowned for hitting the mark for their country although Alexis Vega might get the nod.

AEK Athens midfielder Orbelin Pineda offers a threat from a deeper position and has a double figure tally of goals for his country. Captain Edson Alvarez is also worthy of consideration and there are several Guadalajara players who could emerge with goals including Roberto Alvarado and Luis Romo.

Lyle Foster has been with English club Burnley since 2023 and has eleven goals in eight-nine appearances for the Clarets. However, the twenty-six-year-old has one in three for his country after progressing through the youth ranks for South Africa. There's a reasonable amount of reliance on him although Orlando Pirates pair Evidence Makgopa and Oswin Appollis could also be in the reckoning.

Themba Zwane and Teboho Mokoena are the Mamelodi Sundowns pair who can offer some cut and thrust from midfield although chances might be scarce for the South Africans.
